Why did the internet invent the 404 error?

404 is an HTTP status code for a page that could not be found. The server is there, but the requested address is not.
The exact origin story is less mythic than people sometimes expect, but the code became part of the web’s shared vocabulary because it was short, consistent, and easy to standardize.
