Why does ice float in water?

Most liquids become denser as they cool, but water is unusual. When it freezes, hydrogen bonds arrange the molecules into an open crystal structure.
That open structure makes ice less dense than liquid water, which is why it floats instead of sinking.
Floating ice insulates the water below it, helping ponds and lakes stay livable for fish and other creatures during winter.
